The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means wheel. Chakras are energy centres in the body. There are seven main ones, running from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each one is connected to specific emotions, physical functions and areas of life.
The concept originates from ancient Indian tradition and has been part of healing and spiritual practice for thousands of years. Today it is used widely across energy healing, yoga and meditation.
When the chakras are in balance, we tend to feel grounded, clear and at ease in ourselves. When one or more are out of balance, it can show up as restlessness, low energy, difficulty sleeping, emotional heaviness or a general sense of feeling stuck.
The Seven Chakras
Root Chakra Located at the base of the spine. Colour red. The root chakra is connected to safety, stability and physical grounding. It influences how secure you feel in yourself, in your body and in your daily life. When it is in balance, there is a sense of steadiness and trust. You take care of yourself and your surroundings. When it is out of balance, there can be anxiety, physical tiredness, difficulty settling or a tendency to neglect yourself and your home.
Sacral Chakra Located below the navel. Colour orange. The sacral chakra relates to emotions, creativity and relationships. In balance, there is joy, creative energy and ease in how you connect with yourself and others. Out of balance, things can feel flat or heavy. Energy is low and it can be hard to find pleasure in everyday life.
Solar Plexus Chakra Located above the navel. Colour yellow. This chakra is connected to confidence, self-trust and the ability to take action. This is also where gut instinct sits. In balance, you feel motivated and follow through on what matters to you. Out of balance, self-doubt takes over. You plan but hesitate. The fear of getting things wrong can feel larger than it should.
Heart Chakra Located at the centre of the chest. Colour green. The heart chakra is where the physical and the spiritual meet. It relates to love, compassion and the ability to give and receive openly. In balance, there is warmth, openness and connection. Out of balance, it can feel difficult to let people in, to accept kindness or to truly relax in the company of others.
Throat Chakra Located at the throat. Colour light blue. The throat chakra governs communication and self-expression. In balance, you speak honestly and listen with ease. Out of balance, you may hold things back or struggle to express what you really feel.
Third Eye Chakra Located between the eyebrows. Colour indigo. This chakra relates to intuition, inner clarity and the balance between logic and feeling. In balance, you trust your instincts and can see things clearly. Out of balance, there is overthinking, mental noise or difficulty making decisions.
Crown Chakra Located at the top of the head. Colour violet or white. The crown chakra connects to awareness, stillness and presence. In balance, there is a deep sense of calm. Out of balance, there can be restlessness, disconnection or difficulty being present.
The Chakras and Your Home
The state of your chakras often shows up in how you live. Your home is one of the places this becomes visible.
The root chakra is a clear example. It governs safety and stability. When it is out of balance, there is often a pattern of neglecting the home. Clutter builds up. Things feel disorganised. There is little energy or motivation to take care of the space. When the root chakra comes back into balance, one of the first things people tend to do is clear out, clean and bring order back into their environment.
The heart chakra shows up in how a home feels to share with others. When it is out of balance, spaces can feel closed off, even if they are well designed. When it is in balance, a home tends to feel warm and open, the kind of space where people feel welcome and conversation flows naturally.
The sacral chakra connects to how much beauty and personal expression a home holds. When it is out of balance, a home can feel purely functional. Everything works, but there is no colour, no personal touches, no warmth to it. When it comes back into balance, people often start bringing life back into their space. Flowers, art, textiles, small things that reflect who they are.
These are patterns recognised across traditional chakra teaching and energy healing practice. How you feel and how your home feels are often more connected than you might think.

Simple Ways to Support Your Chakras
Use colour with intention. Each chakra is associated with a colour, from red at the root to violet at the crown. If you feel ungrounded, bring something in the red or earthy spectrum into the room where you spend the most time. A cushion, a throw, a piece of art. If everyday life feels heavy or joyless, introduce warm oranges or yellows. Small, intentional shifts in colour can gently support the energy centre that needs it.
Spend time in nature. Nature has a grounding effect on the entire chakra system, particularly the root chakra. Even ten minutes outside, walking among trees, sitting by water or standing on grass, can help bring your energy back into balance.
Create a space for stillness. Dedicate one corner or area in your home to rest and quiet. A comfortable chair, a cushion on the floor, soft lighting. Keep it simple and uncluttered. Having a specific place to sit, breathe or meditate supports the upper chakras and gives your energy somewhere to settle. If you have the space, a dedicated meditation or healing room takes this further.
Clear your space with intention. Open the windows and let air move through a room for ten minutes. Light sage or Palo Santo if that feels right. Set a simple intention for what you want the room to support. These are small acts, but they shift the energy of a space more than most people realise.
Practices like reiki, chakra balancing and space clearing work directly with these energy centres and can support shifts that awareness and design alone cannot.
What Working with the Chakras Can Help With
People work with the chakras for many reasons. Some of the most common are persistent anxiety, difficulty sleeping, low energy, feeling emotionally stuck, struggling with confidence or decision-making, difficulty connecting with others and a general sense of being unsettled without a clear reason why.
Chakra work does not replace medical or psychological support. But for many people it offers a framework for understanding patterns that are hard to explain otherwise, and a starting point for shifting them.
